Unbalanced Magnetic Pull in Three-phase Electric Motors

  • November 2021
  • Number of views: 949
  • Article rating: 3.0

Although unbalanced magnetic pull can affect other rotating electric machines such as DC motors and generators and single-phase motors and generators, our focus in this article will be on three-phase squirrel cage induction motors. The two main topics are unbalanced magnetic pull (UMP) and rotor pullover.

High Potential Testing Motor Windings with Very Low Frequency

  • October 2021

High potential (hipot) testing procedures for motor and generator windings are usually performed with 50/60 Hz AC or DC as the power source. Hipot testing is a critical step in validating the quality of new windings. AC and DC hipot tests are also useful to understand the condition of aged insulation for machines in service. The disadvantage of the AC test at power frequency is when the size of the test set and/or complexity of the setup becomes problematic in motor repair and in the field. And the DC test stresses the end turns more. The very low frequency (VLF) test set has been successfully used to bridge the test gap between AC and DC hipot tests.

Mitigating Risk with Insulation Systems

Relevant standards including IEC 60085 and IEEE 1 have similar definitions for electrical insulating materials (EIM) and electrical insulation systems (EIS). As with any system, there is an interaction between the materials used, and the insulation system developers take great care to ensure that this interaction does not lead to undesirable outcomes.

Mitigando El Riesgo En Los Sistemas De Aislamiento

A Simple Approach to Duty Ratings of AC Machines

  • August 2021
  • Number of views: 2003

When we consider putting a machine into service, we must consider the duty rating of the machine. If we do not, there is a good chance that the machine being placed into service will have thermal degradation of the windings. Not every application is created equal.
